Stampeders start Grey Cup weekend on a winning note at CFL Awards

The dominance of the Calgary Stampeders in the 2016 CFL regular season was recognized Thursday evening at the Shaw CFL Awards as Stampeders proved victorious in all five categories where the team was nominated.

The CFL’s West Division won all seven awards during Thursday night’s ceremony. In addition to the Stampeders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers kicker Justin Medlock was selected as the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and BC Lions linebacker Solomon Elimimian the Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

The contributions of the late Normie Kwong, who passed away in September at the age of 86, were recognized at the CFL Awards with the presentation of the Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award.

The Stampeders finished the regular season with a 15-2-1 record. The team will look to cap a season of dominance with a victory over the Ottawa Redblacks in Sunday’s 104^th edition of the Grey Cup championship game.
