Race times and fundraising records shattered during Calgary Marathon

CTV Calgary: Record setting marathon The weather cooperated for the 50th annual Scotiabank Calgary Marathon and records were shattered. Ina Sidhu reports.

The 50th annual Scotiabank Calgary Marathon was one for the record books as the 15,000 competitors raised an astounding $1.15 million for charity and new record times were established in the marathon distance.

More than 90 charities in the Calgary area will benefit from the contributions to the Scotiabank Charity Challenge. Kirsten-Ellen Fleming, executive director of Scotiabank Calgary Marathon says the $1.15 million raised surpassed the fundraising goal of organizers.

“The community of Calgary really came together today through the sport of running and by giving back to the community through the Scotiabank Charity Challenge,” said Fleming.

Kip Kangogo, an elite runner from Kenya who became a Canadian citizen last month, shattered the course record finishing the marathon distance in an astounding 2:19:47. Kangogo says he was racing for his daughter, who will celebrate her first birthday on Monday, and to make his family and Alberta proud.

The Lethbridge resident’s time bested the previous record by three minutes and one second.

Emily Chepkorir of Halifax set a new record on the women’s side. Her marathon time of 2:46:21 was more than five minutes faster than the previous record and more than six minutes faster than her nearest competitor, Calgary’s Maria Zambrano.
