The nearly $1 billion expansion of Victoria Hospital has reached the halfway point

The province said it will pay 100 per cent of the capital cost of the project and that the local community and Victoria Hospital Foundation will raise funds for furniture and equipment.

The provincial government says construction on the nearly $1 billion expansion of Prince Albert’s Victoria Hospital has reached the halfway point.

The new multi-story acute care tower, scheduled for completion in spring 2028, is expected to increase the hospital’s capacity by about 40 per cent, with available inpatient beds raising to 242, from 174.

In a news release Monday, Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill called the project “one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan’s history.”

Now, PCL Construction has finished the assembly of the primary structure, which includes a heliport on its roof. The province says insulation is nearly complete on the exterior and cladding is ongoing. With the main structure complete, crews can advance work on major mechanical and electrical systems, and interior finishes like drywall and door frames are well underway, the province says.

Sean Wilson, SaskBuilds and procurement minister, says the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to health care in northern Saskatchewan.

“This project will expand access to modern, high-quality infrastructure not only for Prince Albert and nearby communities, but for residents across the northern half of the province who rely on exceptional care.”

Once open, the new tower will provide larger emergency and operating rooms, dedicated pediatric and maternity units, a new adult mental health and intensive care unit and a medical imaging suite that will house the first MRI in the region.

The neonatal intensive care unit will also move to the new tower and include two additional spaces.

In a statement, Prince Albert Mayor Bill Powalinsky celebrated the halfway point in construction as an “exciting milestone” for the community and the province, particularly for the northern communities for whom P.A. is a key connection point to essential services.

“This hospital is not only vital to our residents but also serves as an essential regional and provincial hub serving all of Northern Saskatchewan. We are thrilled to see this progress and look forward to the benefits it will bring for years to come.”

The Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) is also a key partner in the project and has been actively involved in the facility design, the province says.

“This long-awaited vision is truly taking shape. Victoria Hospital is a vital regional hub for many families, and this expansion will provide more beds, stronger services and specialized care closer to home. PAGC is proud to have been involved from the early stages, including input into the dedicated First Nations and Métis cultural space,” PAGC Chief Brian Hardlotte said.

Hardlotte’s tribal council represents some of the largest reserves in Canada, with member Nations spread across northern Saskatchewan. The total urban and rural populations of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and Lac La Ronge Indian Band alone represent over 26,000 members.
