A grass fire over the weekend at Winnipeg’s Whittier Park prompted a temporary delay to a nearby rail line. According to the City of Winnipeg, the fire broke out around 4:20 p.m. on Sunday near Archibald and Mission streets. To attack the blaze, firefighters used specialized wildland firefighting tools, including fire suppression backpacks. Crews declared the fire under control just before 8 p.m. No one was hurt. The city notes that nearby trains were temporarily halted because of the fire. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service encourages the public to take steps to prevent grass and wildland fires. This includes avoiding open-air fires when wind speeds exceed 25 km/h, not throwing away cigarette butts in vegetation or planter pots, and talking to kids about the dangers of starting fires.
