Monahan backs out of World Cup of Hockey after suffering strain

Team North America will be without Sean Monahan during the upcoming World Cup of Hockey after the Calgary Flames’ forward suffered a back strain during training.

The Calgary Flames announced Monahan’s injury Friday afternoon.

“We anticipate that this is not a long term issue and plan on having Sean healthy and ready for the start of our training camp,” said Flames general manager Brad Treliving.

Team North America, comprised of NHL players under the age of 23, will replace the 21-year-old with Vincent Trocheck of the Florida Panthers.

Monahan is entering his fourth NHL season and signed a seven year contract extension with the Flames in August.

The World Cup of Hockey tournament runs from September 17 through October 1 in Toronto.
