Guilty plea entered in shooting death at southeast Calgary hotel

A guilty plea was entered in court on Monday in relation to a shooting death inside a southeast Calgary hotel two years ago.

Ahmed Abdi Hassan pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the March 2024 death of Liban Abdirahman.

Both men were 29 years old at the time.

Abdirahman was found by police officers who had been called to the Super 8 in the 0-100 block of Shawville Road S.E. for reports of a shooting.

Hassan was arrested in Red Deer the following July.

Hassan was initially charged with second-degree murder. That charge was eventually replaced with a manslaughter charge.

Monday was meant to be the start of a 10-day trial before Hassan entered a guilty plea.

Defence lawyer Balfour Der says the proposed 15-year sentence came from both Hassan’s camp and the Crown.

Taking into consideration time served, that works out to just over 12 years and a month more behind bars.
