1 dead in 2-vehicle collision on Deerfoot Trail

Part of Deerfoot Trail was closed Saturday night due to a 2-vehicle collision that left 1 dead and 1 person in serious, life-threatening condition.

An investigation is underway into a Saturday night collision that left one person dead and one seriously injured.

Police say that around 10:50 p.m., a 2008 Nissan Altima, driven by a man in his 50s, was driving north on Deerfoot Trail approaching Glenmore Trail in the lane closest to the median when it exited the road and hit a construction barrier.

That caused the vehicle’s engine to eject from the vehicle and bounce into the next lane, where a Toyota Rave4 was driving in the same direction when it was struck by the engine.

EMS confirmed that one person was declared dead on scene while a second was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Speed, alcohol and drugs are being investigated as factors on the part of the Altima driver.
