The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has confirmed the man who was the subject of an emergency alert in Nova Scotia Wednesday night was shot and killed by police Thursday morning. SiRT had released a statement Thursday afternoon, stating it was investigating a “police-involved shooting” in Chelsea, N.S., but didn’t release any additional details. SiRT released more details Friday, confirming an RCMP officer “discharged their firearm, striking the male” Thursday morning. “First aid was administered but the male was pronounced deceased at the scene,” it added. No details about the man have been released. Police referred the incident to SiRT, which is investigating. Police had issued emergency alerts for Lunenburg and Queens counties around 6 p.m. Wednesday. The alerts warned residents about a “dangerous man” with a weapon on Highway 210 in Chelsea, N.S., and advised them to find a safe location and lock their doors. The alerts were cancelled around 9 p.m., with police stating they no longer believed there was a risk to public safety. The RCMP responded to a report of a person with a weapon in the same area, on Highway 210 near Chelsea, N.S., around 9 a.m. Thursday. “Officers identified the man as the same person associated to an ongoing investigation about a suspicious person potentially in possession of a weapon from the previous day,” said police in a statement Thursday afternoon. “During the RCMP response, an officer discharged their firearm. The man sustained injuries consistent with a gun shot wound. Officers provided first aid on scene.” Police did not release any further information about the man, including the fact that he died, in their statement Thursday.
