Large scale search held after report male stepped off Hwy 400 bridge: OPP

Police conducted an extensive search for an individual who reportedly went into the water on Sunday evening in Tay Township.

Provincial police say they received a report about a male who had stepped off the Highway 400 northbound bridge in Port Severn around 8:30 p.m.

Police launched multiple OPP units, including the marine unit, the helicopter, and underwater search teams, plus firefighters and the coast guard to help in the search, which required the temporary closure of the Highway 400 southbound lanes through the area.

Police say the extensive search efforts went well into the night with negative results.

By Monday afternoon, provincial police said through the investigation they had determined the individual had entered the water Sunday evening, but later safely exited near where he went in.

Police say the case is now closed. “Officers and involved search masters wish to thank the public for their assistance in this investigation,” OPP finished.
