Sexual assault charges laid against 67-year-old man: Winnipeg police

Police have charged a 67-year-old man following a string of sexual assaults last month. CTV's Daniel Halmarson reports.

A 67-year-old has been charged with sexual assault following several incidents in the Norwood East and Archwood neighbourhoods during the same day.

According to police, officers started investigating after receiving reports of two alleged sexual assaults and a suspicious incident at a school on May 25.

Investigators allege a man confronted two teenage girls walking near Horace Street and Des Meurons Street. Police claim the man approached them and started to grab them, sexually assaulting them in the process. The girls escaped and police said the man continued to follow them until they sought help at a nearby school.

Police claim the man attended a school ground when children were out for recess shortly after noon and commented on the appearance of a group of young girls. They ran and reported the incident to staff.

Police allege the same man approached a woman in her 20s mowing her lawn in the Archwood neighbourhood at 12:30 p.m. They said the man “took hold” of the mower and sexually assaulted the woman. She was able to escape and reported the incident to police.

A 67-year-old man was arrested shortly after 1 p.m. while he was walking in the 400 block of Edgewood Street. He has been charged with three counts of sexual assault and was released with conditions. The charges have not been proven in court.

Winnipeg police continue to investigate and say anyone with information is asked to call the sex crimes unit at 204-986-6245.
