Bogus driveway paving and ‘dirty oil’ scam on the rise, police say

A driveway deal at your doorstep or a “buyer” suddenly spotting smoke under your car hood could cost you thousands of dollars, police warn.

Provincial police say two scams are currently impacting people across Ontario: fake door-to-door contractor jobs and a growing vehicle sales trick known as the “dirty oil” scam.

Contractor scam

Police say contractor scams usually pick up between April and October. Suspects reportedly go door-to-door offering driveway paving, roofing or home repairs at what they claim is a “limited-time price.”

Victims are often asked to pay cash up front, only to receive poor work, unfinished jobs or no work at all.

Authorities say the scammers may look convincing by using flyers, websites, fake names or even pretending to work for legit companies.

“Dirty oil” scam

The OPP is also warning people who are privately selling vehicles online to watch for the “dirty oil” scam.

Officers say fake buyers will arrange to inspect a vehicle. While one person distracts the seller, another reportedly places oil in areas like the engine compartment or tailpipe. When the vehicle starts, smoke appears, making it seem like there is a serious mechanical problem.

The suspects then allegedly pressure the owner into accepting a much lower price, claiming the vehicle is no longer worth what they were originally asking for.

Authorities say residents can protect themselves by being cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, avoiding quick decisions and researching contractors beforehand.

Sellers are aways encouraged by police to meet in public places.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam is asked to contact the OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
