Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher is stepping down from his role, effective Tuesday. Kutcher says he’s going “all-in” for the Island, announcing Monday his intentions to run for leadership of P.E.I.’s Liberal Party. “I can’t wait to get started,” he says in a statement on social media. “Serving the residents of Summerside as Mayor has been one of the greatest honours of my life. I am grateful for all that we accomplished together and hopeful for the future,” he says. “But, Prince Edward Island feels like it has lost its way. That needs to change.” He says he’ll run for the Liberal Party to represent District 21 in the next provincial election regardless of the leadership campaign outcome. Kutcher had served as mayor for the City of Summerside for four years. Deputy Mayor Cory Snow will carry out the mayoral duties until a new mayor is sworn in. The municipality is set for a general election on Nov. 2, and a new mayor and council will be sworn in in December. In a statement on social media, JP Desrosiers, Summerside CAO, confirmed Kutcher’s decision. “On behalf of the city administration, I want to thank Mayor Kutcher for his service to the City of Summerside and wish him and his family well,” he writes.
