Digital billboards will soon be permitted along three major roads in Tecumseh after council approved amendments to the town’s sign bylaw. The changes allow digital billboards along designated sections of County Roads 19, 42 and 46. The move follows the approval of the town’s first digital billboard on County Road 11 in 2024, which was installed on Walker Road in February. According to the town, no complaints or incidents have been reported since that sign was installed. The newly approved locations include portions of County Road 19 between County Road 22 and Sylvestre Drive, County Road 42 near Banwell Road, and County Road 46 between the Windsor boundary and 9th Concession Road. Mayor Gary McNamara said council took a cautious approach when identifying where the signs would be allowed, particularly with respect to nearby residential areas and potential light impacts on homes. McNamara said the signs are intended to provide additional advertising opportunities for businesses, particularly in areas that are or will be commercial corridors, while avoiding residential neighbourhoods. He said he expects only a limited number of digital billboards to be installed under the bylaw changes, likely one in each of the newly designated areas. McNamara added the bylaw amendment is permanent, but the town will continue to monitor the signs for any potential impacts. Any proposed digital billboard will still be required to meet regulations governing maximum height, length and area, as well as setback requirements.
