Youth charged after allegedly stealing car and fleeing police in Shubenacadie, N.S.

A youth has been charged with multiple offences after they allegedly stole a car and fled from police in Shubenacadie, N.S.

East Hants District RCMP responded to a report of a stolen car last Thursday around 9:20 p.m.

Police found the car, a Hyundai Elantra, travelling southbound on Highway 2 and conducted a traffic stop.

“The car pulled over and stopped, then drove away from officers at a high rate of speed. Officers did not pursue the vehicle in consideration of public safety,” reads a news release from RCMP.

Officers reportedly found and tried to stop the car several times, and each time it sped away.

Police found the vehicle again in the 2700 block on Highway 2 around 10:40 p.m.

“While officers initiated a high-risk traffic stop, the driver attempted to flee in the Elantra and struck a responding officer’s vehicle, disabling a car,” says RCMP.

Officers arrested the driver, who was alone in the car. No injuries were reported.

Police allegedly found two imitation firearms and a pry bar when searching the vehicle.

The youth has been charged with:

• dangerous operation
• flight from a peace officer
• motor vehicle theft
• possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• unauthorized possession in a motor vehicle
• possession of a break-in instrument

The youth appeared in Shubenacadie provincial court on Monday and has been remanded into custody pending their next court appearance on Aug. 10.
