Three men are in custody after allegedly fleeing from a stolen vehicle on the Gabarus Highway in Cape Breton early Thursday morning, and one man remains on the loose. Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP) was called to the scene after a vehicle crashed into a ditch around 3 a.m. The owner had reported the vehicle was stolen by a group of men he knew, adding they allegedly threatened to harm him with a weapon. With help from police dogs, police say officers tracked one of the men through a nearby wooded area and found him hiding in a tree. Other officers patrolling the area found a truck parked further down the highway, belonging to one of the suspects. “On approaching the vehicle, one male ran away into another wooded area and two men inside fled with the truck. A short time later, officers located one of the men from the truck hiding in a ditch,” reads a social media post from CBRP. Police say a second team of police dogs found the other man who ran into the woods. The three were placed under arrest. “The truck would not stop for police, who did not continue pursuit in the interest of public safety; police have identified the person who was driving and continue to make attempts to locate him as part of the ongoing investigation,” reads the post.
