Springhill Institution ends week-long lockdown after finding contraband

A medium-security federal institution in Nova Scotia has ended its lockdown after nearly a week following an “exceptional search.”

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says it locked down the Springhill Institution on May 15. It is now lifted and visits have been reinstated.

During the search, CSC says they found contraband and unauthorized items.

“The institution is resuming regular operations, through a controlled approach to ensure the safe and orderly restart of activities,” a news release from CSC reads.

On Monday, the CSC also locked down a medium-security unit at the Dorchester Penitentiary in New Brunswick for a search.
