Cape Breton political scientist releases second children’s book as part of healing journey

Tom Urbaniak’s book Oliver’s Polish Christmas helped him connect with his young son and overcome tragedy.

A Cape Breton University political science professor has turned to writing to help with his grieving process.

On Tuesday, Tom Urbaniak was at the Old Town Hall in Glace Bay, N.S., selling copies of his second children’s book.

“Two years ago, I never would have imagined stepping into the realm of writing children’s books,” Urbaniak told CTV Atlantic at the event.

His latest book is called “Oliver’s Polish Christmas.”

Though it’s a fictional story, Urbaniak says it is about his three-and-a-half-year-old son Oliver’s search for the meaning of a traditional Polish holiday.

“In the story, Oliver – my son Oliver – visits his bab­cia and dzi­adzia – his grandma and grandpa – which he actually did in the fall of 2023 in Ontario shortly before they passed away,” said Urbaniak.

On Valentine’s Day 2024, Urbaniak’s wife, and Oliver’s mother, Alison Etter died unexpectedly following an illness. She was only 41 years old.

A short time later, both of Urbaniak’s parents passed away. He says writing has become part of his and his son’s healing.

“I’m still shocked that she is not here physically,” Urbaniak said of his late wife. “The book ‘You Are Loved’ (his first book) tells Oliver about his makta – his mom – and her love and the different ways she expressed that. Oliver had just turned two when his mom passed away. He still has memories, direct memories, of her.”

Marg MacQueen was one of a few dozen supporters who turned up for the book signing.

“I think it’s such a loving gesture,” said MacQueen. “I’ve read a few pages and it’s so well-written.”

Urbaniak’s first book, “You Are Loved,” was written to his son Oliver. Now that Oliver has gotten a bit older, his second book about Polish Christmas was written in partnership with his son.

“It’s helped me, first and foremost, to connect with Oliver even more,” said Urbaniak. “Because we’ve gone through drafts together. He has shared with me what illustrations have had an impact on him.”

Urbaniak said his latest book is dedicated to his parents’ memory, adding their legacy, along with his wife’s, carries with it a broader message.

“We’re in a world torn by conflict, anger, hatred, animosity, jealousy,” said Urbaniak. “And this is saying there’s a better way and love is a force, and it’s a force that lives even when our loved ones alive and with us.”
