The story of the Manitoba-born spymaster who reportedly inspired the creation of James Bond

Alan Parkin & Dwight MacAulay from The Intrepid Society share the story of Winnipeg-born Sir William Stephenson — the real-life inspiration behind 007.

A Winnipeg-born soldier, businessman and master spy is thought to be the inspiration behind the iconic character of James Bond.

His name was Sir William Samuel Stephenson, but he is best known by Intrepid, his wartime intelligence codename.

With only a Grade 6 education level, Stephenson went on to lead a career in business and play an important role in the Allied victory in the Second World War by establishing British security coordination in New York City.

“Just an incredible achievement. A humble boy from the Prairies,” said Alan Parkin, president of the Intrepid Society Inc. in an interview with Your Morning Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Beyond his long list of achievements, many also believe Stephenson to be the inspiration for 007.

According to Intrepid Society past president Dwight MacAulay, Stephenson was a friend and neighbour of Ian Fleming, the author behind the James Bond novels.

He added the pair both had an affinity for martinis, with Fleming admiring Stephenson’s love of gadgets.

“Sir William Stephenson didn’t look like Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan or Sean Connery…I think Ian Fleming gave James Bond the adventures of Sir William Stephenson and he gave him the looks of the movie star Cary Grant,” he said.

Parkin explained the Intrepid Society continues to work to keep the memory of Stephenson alive with guest speakers, gatherings, and book and movie clubs.
