Southern Manitoba feeling early spring conditions, the north getting hit with bitter cold

It is a stretch to say that March came in like a lion on Sunday, but conditions were cold and windy in Winnipeg to start the new month.

Sunday also marked the first day of meteorological spring – the months of March, April and May. Although a day late, conditions on Monday will feel much more like early spring.

Temperatures across most of southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg and Brandon, will reach the freezing mark or remain just below it on Monday afternoon.

On the other hand, Dauphin, Swan River and surrounding areas will see temperatures fall, with the possibility of light snow.

Meanwhile, March is off to a bitterly cold start in the Brochet and Tadoule Lake regions in northern Manitoba, where yellow warnings for cold continue on Monday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said a prolonged period of wind chills between -45 and -50 continues, adding the most extreme wind chills will come overnight and early morning.

No relief is coming soon – ECCC said these wind chill values will continue for the next several nights.

Conversely, the first week of March will bring quiet conditions and seasonal temperatures to Winnipeg, ahead of a sunny and warm weekend.
