Severe thunderstorms could bring powerful wind gusts, tornado to parts of Manitoba: ECCC

Parts of Manitoba could be in for a stormy day ahead.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a southeastern section of the province including Pinawa, Lac du Bonnet, Falcon Lake, Nopiming and Shoal Lake.

The weather agency warns an approaching trough of low pressure could brew severe thunderstorms that could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain over the area on Thursday afternoon and into the early evening.

Hazards associated with this system include up to 90 km/h wind gusts, up to three cm of hail, heavy downpours and an isolated tornado.

“If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. When thunder roars, go indoors,” ECCC wrote.

Elsewhere in Manitoba, an orange blizzard warning is in effect, forecasting that northern and central regions could get pounded with 30 to 50 centimetres of snow beginning Thursday and lasting until Saturday.
