Provincial park evacuation creating financial strain for businesses

Flooded campsites, road washouts, and evacuations have led to major disruptions for businesses in Duck Mountain Provincial Park.

The park is set to reopen to cottagers, seasonal campers and day visitors on Friday, about five days after heavy rainfall forced an evacuation. Nightly campsites remain closed until July 23 as cleanup and road repairs continue.

The closure came during the park’s busiest season, creating difficulties for businesses operating in and around the area.

“It’s been a tough one for us and the other lodge owners in the Duck Mountains,” said Cam McIntyre, owner of Wellman Lake Lodge, in an interview with Your Morning Winnipeg on Thursday.

“Generally going into the beginning of July is the largest portion of the revenue stream for the season, and, of course, we have a short season up here.”

McIntyre said his lodge has been “basically closed,” though he’s been allowing some access to the store.

He said their revenue is down to zero, which poses issues for the wintertime as the money needs to be made in the summer.

Though McIntyre is happy the park is reopening, he explained the cancellation of certain programs, like church camps and swimming lessons, will bring fewer people to the area.

“It would sure take a lot [to salvage the season],” he said.

“It’s unfortunate and doubtful without some kind of help.”
