More than 70 wildfires active in northern Saskatchewan

The number of wildfires in Saskatchewan continues to climb, according to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).

As of 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, there are 72 active wildfires across the northern part of the province.

Of those, eight are contained, nine are not contained, 46 are ongoing assessment, and nine are labeled as protecting values.

The largest fires include the Border fire, which accounts for 12,116 hectares, the Costigan fire at 13,089 hectares, and the Kerslake fire at 9,926 hectares.

There are currently no wildfire evacuation orders in place.

As of Thursday morning, there is only one fire ban in effect in Aylsham, just north of Tisdale.

On Monday, the SPSA recorded 64 active wildfires in the province.

While the number of wildfires in the province continues to increase, the total count is nowhere near what it was last year.

To date, there have been 223 wildfires in the province, compared to 366 at this time last year. The five-year average to date is 266.

The SPSA is set to hold an update on the province’s wildfire and flooding situation on Thursday afternoon.
