Manitoba highways reopen after blustery blast during morning commute

Manitoba highways have reopened once more after intense winds and blowing snow shut down a number of roadways Friday morning.

A slew of highways, including sections of the Trans Canada, Highway 9 and the entire Perimeter, reopened Friday afternoon, the province’s highway map shows.

Northwesterly wind gusts as high as 80 km/h caused near-zero visibility issues on Friday morning, sparking blowing snow and wind advisories through much of southern Manitoba.

The City of Winnipeg suspended recycling and garbage collection Friday due to the weather and closed the Brady Road Landfill and 4R depot due to the weather and road conditions.

A Manitoba school division also cancelled bus service.

While blowing snow advisories remained in effect in parts of the southwest, Environment and Climate Change Canada said conditions were expected to improve Friday night.
