New cable ferry on its way from Selkirk to serve Norway House

Extended: Massive cable ferry moves from Selkirk CTV Winnipeg's photojournalist Simon Stones traveled to Selkirk to find out what it takes to build a 156-tonne cable ferry.

A new 156-tonne cable ferry made its way through Selkirk Friday morning, on the back of a 96-tire moving device.

The ferry itself measures 100 feet by 40 feet and was transported 16 kilometres north from where it was built in Selkirk.

Manitoba infrastructure said pilot vehicles escorted the move.

The $3.1-million ferry is about 75 per cent complete and will be finished on land at a provincial yard in Selkirk.

Once complete, the ferry will serve the community and area of Norway House First Nation along Nelson River.

It will replace the aging C.F. James Apetagon that has been in service since 1977.
