Katherine Dow’s forecast: another round of spring snow before temps rebound

The snowy onslaught doesn’t show signs of letting up through parts of southern Manitoba on Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) warns the low pressure system that sprinkled snow throughout the area overnight will continue to bring heavy snow through parts of the Interlake and the Red River Valley and a rain-snow mix to areas further south, like Winnipeg and Brandon.

Communities still under ECCC’s yellow snowfall warning, like Gimli, Dauphin, Berens River and Riding Mountain National Park, could still get between 5 to 15 centimetres of snow today. That’s in addition to what fell overnight.

Temperatures throughout the province will peak a few degrees above freezing. For Winnipeg, we’re expected to reach a high of 2 C—a ways off from the seasonal high of 8 C.

It’s a different story to the north, where the sun is shining with similar highs expected alongside northeasterly winds at 20 km/h.

Skies in that neck of the woods are expected to remain clear overnight with temperatures dipping to the low minus teens with winds easing a touch.

Meanwhile, much of the south can expect periods of light snow overnight and into early Thursday morning. Winds are expected to ramp up out of the north at 30 gusting at times to 50 km/h.

A mix of sun and cloud is expected through the south on Thursday, but temperatures don’t rebound to near seasonal values until the back half of the week.
