Manitobans being warned to stay safe as hot weather hits the province

Manitobans are being encouraged to stay safe in the heat as temperatures are expected to rise in the province.

On Saturday afternoon, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued heat warnings for several southern Manitoba communities, including in Winnipeg.

According to the weather agency, daytime highs in the low-to-mid 30s and nighttime lows of 16 degrees or warmer are forecast from Sunday through Tuesday.

ECCC is urging Manitobans to protect themselves during the heat and watch for signs of heat exhaustion, which include headache, dizziness, nausea, thirstiness and fatigue.

It adds that heat stroke is considered a medical emergency and to call 911 if you or someone around you is showing signs of heat stroke. This includes dizziness, nausea, confusion, a change in consciousness and red, hot skin.

To stay safe in the heat, ECCC recommends drinking lots of water, turning on air conditioning, closing blinds and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothes. It notes you should schedule your outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day and try to limit direct exposure to the sun.

City of Winnipeg helping residents to cool off

The City of Winnipeg is also taking steps to help residents stay safe by providing access to drinking water and places to cool off.

The city is setting up four water tanks to keep Winnipeggers hydrated. These can be found at 888 Main St., 300 Princess St., 364 Furby St., and 190 Disraeli Fwy.

Residents can also go to city-owned leisure centres and libraries during operating hours to find relief from the heat and cool down.
