Police in Nanaimo are asking for the public’s help identifying a man who made a “distinctive choice of clothing” while allegedly attempting to commit credit card fraud. The man entered the University Liquor Store around 10:30 p.m. on June 8 and “attempted to purchase alcohol using a stolen credit card,” Nanaimo RCMP said in a news release Friday. “Unbeknownst to him, the card had already been cancelled, and the transaction was declined,” the release reads. “The individual then left, empty handed, while still in possession of the cancelled credit card.” Police described the man as a white man in his 20s who was wearing a green poncho, an orange-and-white baseball cap and black gloves. A photo shared with the news release shows the poncho covering a backpack or something similar strapped to the man’s back. “While his bright green outfit may have made him stand out, we’re hoping it’s his identity that the public can help us uncover,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP. Anyone who recognizes the man from the photo or description is asked to call the Nanaimo RMCP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, police said.
