Why do cars keep crashing at this Winnipeg intersection?

A Waverly West intersection has been the site of multiple crashes, prompting the area councillor to call for a traffic study. Jeff Keele explains.

A mystery is unfolding at a Waverley West intersection.

Why do vehicles keep crashing there?

“I really don’t know.” Said Waverley West Councillor Janice Lukes. “…it’s not an unusual intersection.”

Area councillor Janice Lukes, who also chairs the public works committee, says in the last few months there have been multiples crashes at Kenaston Boulevard northbound and North Town Road. In at least one accident a vehicle crashed into and damaged a decorative wall. Temporary barricades are in place now.

This has raised concerns as the wall is protecting the playground area of the Bright Scholars Montessori daycare.

Parent Amit Kumar says there are a lot of accidents at the intersection where the daycare operates.

“It’s so close that it could be a concern to you know a lot of other people,” said Kumar

Lukes has asked the city’s public service to calculate how many collisions have happened here in the last five years, and if there are any safety measures that can be put in place.

“…To look at it from an engineering perspective, you know maybe there’s something that needs to be changed,“ said Lukes

Numbers from MPI show there were 31 collisions at the intersection in 2025, compared to 19 in 2024, 21 in 2023, 28 in 2022, and 26 in 2021.

Khesho Mongru, the president of the daycare, says they’d like to see additional barricades, new signage, and a speed limit reduction around the intersection.

“I have touched base with levels of government. I understand there’s some, some, barriers to that as well, but that would be excellent if we had a school zone for a portion that we are at” said Mongru

Public works officials say they will report back with data and potential safety upgrades in six months.
