Manitoba weather: Fresh blast of Arctic air heading our way

Unseasonably mild temperatures didn’t quite last until the end of November, but cold conditions on this first day of December and meteorological winter are a reminder that winter is on its way.

It’s not just the flip of the calendar – surface high pressure is sending a fresh blast of Arctic air our way.

Winnipeg, Brandon and most of southern Manitoba will see sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud Monday, with chilly daytime highs well below normal around -11 C or -12 C.

Morden and Winkler will be slightly less cold, with an almost enviable forecast high of -9 C.

Most of northwestern Manitoba will be grazed by a dusting of light snow Monday, while Thompson will see light snow taper to even lighter flurries.

Conditions are mixed in the northeast, with sunshine in Gillam, and snow in Island Lake.

Daytime highs in the most northern communities in the province will only reach the -20s Monday afternoon, while areas further south will be closer to the minus mid-teens.

Northwestern Ontario will be cloudy with an outside chance flurries Monday, and highs around the region around -9 C.

Meanwhile, an Alberta clipper is on its way. The low-pressure system will cross Saskatchewan Monday night, before moving through Manitoba on Tuesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says it is a weak system, with no significant accumulations expected.

Snow is expected to reach Brandon overnight before spreading to Winnipeg in the morning, possibly by the tail end of the morning commute.

Clippers, by their nature, usually pass through quickly. The one should do the same and be on its way out by Tuesday night.
