Arrests made after liquor seized in alcohol-free community  

Two men are facing charges after jerry cans filled with liquor were seized from a dry community.

Two suspects have been arrested after they were found to be in possession of jerry cans filled with liquor in a Manitoba community that prohibits alcohol.

The incident took place on April 7 when First Nation Safety Officers were conducting patrols on the winter road in Bunibonibee Cree Nation and came across a pair of snowmobilers who attempted to flee as officers approached.

According to RCMP, the male suspects, ages 22 and 46, didn’t make it far as the snowmobile broke down.

As officers approached the suspects, they saw several jerry cans, which the two men tried to throw onto the side of the road. Upon further examination, officers determined the jerry cans were filled with alcohol.

The two snowmobilers were also found to be in possession of cash and a small amount of drugs, believed to be cocaine.

Mounties noted that Bunibonibee Cree Nation has by-laws in place that prohibit the sale and possession of alcohol and drugs.

The suspects were taken to the Oxford House RCMP detachment where they were re-arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, as well as other offences under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act.

The 22-year-old was released by a judicial justice of the peace, and the 46-year-old was released on an order for a future court date.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
