Air quality warnings issued for much of Manitoba

Smoke from nearby wildfires is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility for much of Manitoba.

On Thursday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued air quality warnings and statements for several Manitoba communities, including Winnipeg, Brandon, and The Pas.

According to ECCC, smoke will be thick throughout Thursday in the Red River Valley but will move out by Friday morning. Smoky conditions will end on Thursday afternoon in western Manitoba but will continue until noon on Friday in the east. The weather agency adds that the smoke will linger for a prolonged period near the source region of the fires.

ECCC warns that smoke puts everyone’s health at risk, but especially those over the age of 65, pregnant people, infants and young kids, those with existing illnesses, and people who work outside.

To stay safe, the weather agency recommends limiting time outdoors, keeping windows and doors closed, and using a good quality air filter in your ventilation system. For those who must spend time outside, it’s recommended that you wear a well-fitting respirator-type mask.

Smoky conditions can lead to symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, as well as a headache or mild cough. More serious symptoms including wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.

Smoke prompts WSD postponement

The Winnipeg School Division has postponed its 6th annual Pow Wow Celebration, which was scheduled for Thursday, as the city deals with poor air quality. The division is also cancelling all outdoor school activities, including recess, for the day.

As of 11 a.m. on Thursday, ECCC has Winnipeg at a nine on the air quality health index, which means there is a high risk.
