Calgary police say a person has died following a fight in the southwest community of Woodlands. At 5:40 a.m. on Wednesday, police were called to the 2100 block of Woodview Drive S.W. for “a serious assault.” Police say one person has succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Investigators believe the incident was a targeted attack. A section of the road was shut down from Woodhill Court to Woodpark Boulevard S.W. for the investigation. A strip mall at 523 Woodpark Blvd. S.W. was also been closed. The scene was cleared by about 11:30 a.m. “When we respond to calls like this, it’s important to capture all the evidence available,“ said Acting Insp. Mike Anderson. “It often necessitates a large crime scene, and a little bit of inconvenience for residents, but it’s part of our job and being thorough.” Residents in the area say it’s a safe community, so something like this chilling. “It’s terrifying,” said Christy Kloepper, who has a young son. “I am terrified to be going around on walks by ourselves anymore. “We like to walk around the neighbourhood. We just moved here. It’s a safe neighbourhood and we wanted to raise our little guy here. It’s kind of scary when it happens right across the street from your house.” Residents being ‘terrorized’ Another resident, Helena, said she doesn’t feel safe going out at nighttime in her community. In Wednesday’s incident, said she looked out her bedroom window earlier in the morning and saw a group of individuals arguing. “It escalated (and) escalated,” Helena said. “They were really loud.” She went back to bed and woke up around 7 a.m. to see police in the area. “I feel really bad about going back to bed because I didn’t see where they went.” Helena has lived in the community for several years and says the makeup has changed since she moved in. “I’m part of a Facebook group and the neighbours, especially in Woodbine, are always talking about people trying their car doors, trying their houses, they’re impersonating people.” She said people are being “terrorized.” “There is a senior couple somewhere in the neighbourhood, the man has dementia and the woman is not well. The daughter has told people teenagers come and terrorize them at night time, throwing rocks at the house.” Anderson says the public has been very cooperative with the investigation and helpful to police in figuring out what happened. “We encourage anyone who has information to reach out to us,” he said.
