Spits open OHL tournament with a victory

The Windsor Spitfires opened the Ontario Hockey League Preseason Showcase with a victory.

The Spitfires defeated the Flint Firebirds 4-3 Friday in the first game of the tournament at the Key Bank Rink in Buffalo.

Flint scored first in the hockey game, but Chris Playfair scored twice in a 21-second span in the second period to give the Spitfires a lead they would not relinquish.

Playfair also added an assist while Joseph Mizzi had a goal and two assists for Windsor and Igor Larionov scored the eventual game winner at 1:45 of the third period.

Brock Baier recorded the victory for the Spitfires, making 37 saves.

The Spits will take on the North Bay Battalion at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
