A proposed hotel and mixed-use development in Amherstburg is headed to a public meeting Monday, with council looking for feedback before any decisions are made. The proposal would see a developer build a five-storey hotel and three four-storey mixed-use buildings with residential units and commercial space at the northwest corner of Simcoe Street and Meloche Road. Coun. Linden Crain says reaction among residents has been mixed. “I’ve been hearing residents that are looking forward to a development like this, a mixed-use development, but there’s also residents that are concerned with overflow parking,” he said. “They’re concerned with a high rise building, what that would do for privacy for those living nearby.” “Monday is just to gather information. Staff will then compile a report. They will continue speaking with the County of Essex, Windsor police, a number of other parties and then they’ll bring forward a final report to council,” Crain said. “Whether it be this one or the new council, and that will have the final recommendation in there.” He says he’s looking forward to hearing directly from residents at the meeting. “I’m not 100 per cent sold on it yet,” said Crain. “I always want to hear from residents, hear what their thoughts are, what their concerns are, and then have staff go back and do their homework and come back to council with the final recommendation.” The statutory public meeting will happen at Amherstburg Town Hall at 4 p.m. Residents can attend in-person or watch online. Registration for in-person feedback is not required.
