Police in northwestern Ontario have charged a 31-year-old Atikokan man with impaired and drug offences after receiving a report of someone asleep at the wheel last week. Multiple calls to Ontario Provincial Police at 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 6 said someone was sleeping in their vehicle downtown. “The vehicle and driver were located after a brief search,” the OPP said in a news release Aug. 8. Obviously on drugs “Investigation determined that the driver was obviously impaired by drug consumption and was arrested at the scene. Police seized a personal use quantity of suspected crack cocaine as well as related drug use tools that were in plain view with the driver.” A blood sample was taken at the Atikokan OPP detachment. The 31-year-old has been charged with drugged driving and cocaine possession. He was released and has an Oct. 29 court date in the Atikokan Ontario Court of Justice. “Impaired driving is a public safety emergency and continues to be one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities,” police said. “If you suspect that someone is driving impaired, call 911. Your call could be saving a life.”
