Overall crime decreases, violent crime increases in Windsor/Amherstburg: Stats Can

Overall crime has decreased, but violent crime increased in Windsor and Amherstburg, according to a report from Statistics Canada.

Stats Can has released its 2024 Crime Severity Index (CSI), which tracks the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime across the country.

Here is what this latest data shows for Windsor and Amherstburg:

• Overall CSI decreased by 5 per cent
• Violent CSI increased by 3.1 per cent
• Non-violent CSI decreased by 8.7 per cent

Compared to 2023, robberies rose by 12 per cent and assaults with weapons causing bodily harm increased by 15.9 pre cent. Of all reported assaults, 41.01 per cent were related to intimate partner violence.

Key factors contributing to non-violent crime included break-and-enters (down 1.8per cent), fraud (down 5.7per cent), and shoplifting (up 10.7per cent).

“The decline in overall and non-violent crime is a positive sign that our prevention strategies are making an impact,” said Jason Crowley, Deputy Chief of Operations. “We remain focused on addressing the rise in violent crime, particularly intimate partner violence, to ensure everyone in Windsor and Amherstburg feels safe and supported.”

The CSI measures changes in the level of severity of crime in Canada from year to year. All crimes are assigned a weight based on their seriousness. The level of seriousness is based on actual sentences handed down by the courts in all provinces and territories.
