Black bear forces closure of Vancouver Island campground

A campground on Vancouver Island has been closed to protect the public after reported black bear activity in the area.

The Elk Falls Provincial Park Campground in Campbell River was evacuated and will remain closed until parks staff and conservation officers deem it safe, officials said.

A bear frequenting the area damaged an unoccupied tent, and there have been no reports of the animal attacking any humans, a spokesperson for the environment ministry told CTV News on Friday.

Traps have been set up in the park.

Updates the opening status of the campground will be posted on the BC Parks website.
