A four-year-old child is recovering from serious injuries after falling from a second-floor window in Metro Vancouver this week. Authorities said the incident happened at a property on 236 Street in Maple Ridge on the afternoon of the Victoria Day holiday. The child was airlifted to hospital in stable condition, according to Maple Ridge RCMP. “Officers spoke with multiple individuals on scene, including the distraught parents of the child,” the detachment said in a news release Wednesday. “Based on initial investigation, the incident appears to be an unfortunate accident.” Officers found no evidence of foul play or criminality, authorities said. As the weather warms, officials have issued warnings to parents about the dangers associated with unsecured windows, particularly after the death of a toddler in Toronto earlier this month. The emergency department at B.C. Children’s Hospital treated 23 injuries related to falls from windows and balconies last year—a sharp increase from the 15 recorded in 2024. The hospital and B.C. Emergency Health Services recommend installing locks that prevent windows from being opened more than 10 centimetres, and arranging furniture away from windows and balconies to prevent children from climbing onto ledges.
