An Esterhazy man has been given a 12-month conditional sentence for stealing money from the Esterhazy Minor Hockey Association. Cory Smith, 37, was convicted of stealing in excess of $5,000 from the hockey club between January 2025 and July 2025. Smith pleaded guilty in Esterhazy Provincial Court and was sentenced on Tuesday. According to the minutes from the hockey association’s 2025 annual general meeting, Smith stole roughly $46,000 in total from the organization. Most of the theft was through e-transfers, with some were through cash on hand. The minutes state he voluntarily paid back $20,000 following his arrest in 2025. Court documents reveal Smith is also required to pay $24,798 to the minor hockey association by Sept. 1, 2026. As part of his conditional sentence, Smith is required to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. He’s also required to: Smith is also required to stay at an approved residence and is subject to a curfew at said residence, unless he’s received written permission indicating otherwise. The 38-year-old is prohibited from possessing or consuming alcohol, cannabis or drugs that haven’t been prescribed by a doctor for the duration of his sentence. He’s also not permitted to enter or be in any place where the main purpose is the sale of alcohol or cannabis, such as bars, liquor stores or cannabis stores. Smith must also prepare and deliver a supervisor-approved apology to Esterhazy Minor Hockey Association by Sept. 30, 2026.
