Woman critically injured in Maple Ridge’s 2nd pedestrian collision in 2 days, RCMP say

An investigation is underway after a 45-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle in Maple Ridge—the second serious pedestrian crash in the city in two days.

Ridge Meadows RCMP said the incident unfolded in the 12200 block of 227 Street at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

“Officers arrived on scene and learned that a pedestrian was crossing mid-block when they were struck by a vehicle travelling northbound on 227 Street,” Mounties said in a news release Wednesday.

The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is co-operating with them.

Authorities said they’re speaking with possible witnesses and reviewing surveillance video from the area.

The collision comes just one day after a 91-year-old using a mobility scooter was struck by a vehicle in Maple Ridge on Monday afternoon.

The victim in that crash remains hospitalized and is in stable, but serious condition, according to Mounties.

RCMP are urging the public to remain vigilant on the roads.

“While our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected by these unfortunate incidents, we also want to encourage our community to take this moment to reflect on road safety,” Insp. Martin Guay said in the release. “Even small, simple actions can make a big difference in keeping yourself and others safe. We don’t want anyone to become a statistic or face avoidable harm.”

Mounties are reminding drivers to stay alert behind the wheel and slow down, particularly near intersections or areas with limited visibility.

They’re also urging pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers and to use designated crossings whenever possible.
