Police in Vancouver say two men have been charged in connection with the violent robbery of a 75-year-old man in the city’s Downtown Eastside. The incident happened around 9:15 a.m. on July 28, when authorities say the victim was attacked and robbed while out for a walk near the intersection of East Hastings Street and Jackson Avenue. The victim, who police identified as a resident of the area, then followed the suspects in an attempt to recover his property. During a second confrontation that was captured on surveillance video, the senior was slammed into a wall before the suspects fled the area. The victim was transported to hospital with a head injury, bruises and abrasions, while investigators issued a public appeal for information about the suspects. On Tuesday, one week after the incident, the Vancouver Police Department announced charges against two men—43-year-old Kurt Werner Steinhauser and 40-year-old Andre Joseph Brunet. Court records show both men were charged with one count of robbery. Police say the men were arrested separately without incident. One of the suspects was identified after police responded to a report of an unwanted person inside a residence, while the other was spotted during a routine patrol, according to the department. Both men were held in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
