RCMP seek suspect after woman sexually assaulted in Burnaby park

Mounties in Burnaby are warning the public after a woman was sexually assaulted while walking through a Burnaby park last week.

Burnaby RCMP said officers were called to the 6500 block of Marlborough Avenue for a report of an assault in Lobley Park just after 7:45 p.m. on Friday.

The incident reportedly took place in the southwest corner of the park, near Grimmer Street and Dunblane Avenue.

Police said the victim — a woman in her 30s — was walking through the park when she was grabbed from behind by an unknown man.

The suspect then allegedly put one hand over the victim’s mouth and touched her groin and buttocks.

She fought back against the man, and he eventually ran off towards Marlborough Avenue.

Mounties said Integrated Police Dog Services were called in to help track down the man, however, the suspect was not found.

“Keeping in mind this happened at a time of day when it is dark and the woman was grabbed from behind, we are sharing the best description that is currently available,” Cpl. Laura Hirst said in a news release Wednesday.

The man is described as approximately 5’8” to 5’11” tall, with a medium build. Police believe he is between 30 and 40 years old and was wearing all black at the time.

Burnaby RCMP’s High Risk Offender Unit is investigating the assault and is “taking all steps” to identify the suspect involved.
