Police investigating suspected arson at Abbotsford, B.C., school

A school in Abbotsford is closed Monday following what police are calling a suspected arson.

Police in Abbotsford, B.C., are investigating a suspected arson at an adult education centre early Monday morning.

The fire at the Bakerview Centre for Learning was reported shortly after 3:45 a.m., according to a news release from the Abbotsford Police Department.

Officers who responded to the 32600 block of Marshall Road found firefighters already at the scene working to extinguish a small blaze.

No injuries were reported, but investigators say the fire caused damage to both the interior and exterior of the building.

“The fire is being investigated as an arson,” police said. “The investigation is in its early stages, and additional resources are being brought in to assist.”

The Bakerview Centre for Learning—described by the Abbotsford School District as “a secondary school for learners between the ages of 14 and 65”—will be closed to students and staff for the day.

In a statement posted on its website, the school district says staff and families will be notified if the closure extends beyond today.

Fire investigators are expected to remain on scene throughout the day to assess the damage and collect evidence.
