Evander Kane meets Vancouver media; Canucks fans hope for more headlines on the ice than off

The newly acquired forward made his first public appearance since being traded by the Edmonton Oilers. Are Vancouver fans ready to welcome the polarizing player

Newly acquired forward Evander Kane made his Rogers Arena debut in Vancouver Canucks colours Thursday, as the polarizing National Hockey League star faced local media for the first time.

“I’m very confident in what I can do, and I think Vancouver is going to provide me a really good opportunity to do that,” said Kane, dressed in a double-breasted suit in Canucks blue and green.

On Wednesday, the Canucks sent a 2025 fourth-round draft pick to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for the 33-year-old power forward.

Outside the arena, fans reacted to the deal.

“He’s a good player. Talented,” Jeff Elliott told CTV News. “But maybe some personality issues. I’ve heard about the gambling and partying.”

A long history of off-ice incidents has dogged Kane throughout his 16-year NHL career.

In 2016, Kane turned himself into police in Buffalo, New York, after he was accused of getting into a physical altercation with three women in a bar.

A judge later agreed to drop charges of trespassing and harassment provided Kane could stay out of legal trouble for six months.

In 2019, while Kane was a member of the San Jose Sharks, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas filed a lawsuit against Kane alleging he owed $500,000 in unpaid gambling debts.

The casino claimed it had provided the money to Kane on credit so he could gamble between games during a playoff series between the San Jose Sharks and Las Vegas Golden Knights.

Kane had signed a seven-year, $49-million contract with the Sharks the previous summer.

In 2021, despite making tens of millions of dollars to that point in his career, Kane filed for bankruptcy.

The filing listed $26.8 million in debts to 47 different creditors, and $10.2 million in assets.

One of the creditors was a California woman with a lawsuit against Kane alleging he had reneged on a promise to pay her $3 million to get an abortion.

Asked on Thursday if the many trials and tribulations he had faced had humbled him in any way, Kane disagreed.

“I don’t know if humbled is the right word,” he responded.

“What real character is, is somebody who shows you who they are when there’s scrutiny and adversity, and how they handle that. I think obviously there’s been some difficult times for myself, but I think I’ve come out of it better off and better for it.”

Kane grew up in East Vancouver and returns to the city of his birth with a young family of his own.

He claims to have grown over the years.

“Am I a new guy? No, I’m the same guy,” Kane said. “I think, you know, if you’re not improving in all aspects of your life, you’re probably not where you want to be.”

The Canucks become Kane’s fifth NHL team.

In the playoffs with Edmonton over the past two years, Kane has scored 10 goals and added 10 assists as he helped the Oilers make consecutive Stanley Cup final appearances.

West coast hockey fans hope that is the version of Kane they are getting.

“On the ice performance is what we’re looking for and having a great 25/26 season,” said Canucks fan Matt Morrow.

Kane brings a unique blend of speed, skill and toughness which should make the Canucks a more exciting team.

For fans, keeping the headlines focused on hockey will be one measure of his success in the coming season.
