Hundreds of school children got a behind-the-scenes look at how the City of Regina keeps things running during a special tour of the public works yard on Wednesday. Public Works Day gave students a chance to see heavy equipment up close -from machines used to clear snow from city streets to equipment used to dig and repair water and sewer lines. The City of Regina’s Public Works Department employs about 600 people who carry out a wide range of services across the city. Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski says the event helps students better understand how municipal services operate and the work that goes on behind the scenes. “We need to get the work done. We know we have a lot of work to catch up on,” Bachynski said. “My message is, be patient. We are going to do our best to communicate to residents. We have our online construction map that will tell you where construction is happening and when, so you can plan your route accordingly.” Mayor Bachynski has also declared this week Public Works Week, recognizing the workers who keep city infrastructure operating day to day.
