Police in western Quebec say a 36-year-old Ottawa man has died after being hit by a school bus in Chelsea on Thursday. According to MRC des Collines de l’Outaouais police, the man was cycling across Route 105 near the Alonzo-Wright bridge at around 3:30 p.m. when he was hit by a northbound school bus. Sgt. Martin Fournel, community relations and prevention officer with the MRC des Collines-de l’Outaouais, says the victim was pronounced dead in hospital. They were wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Fournel says there is video footage of the incident, but an investigation is under way and officers are working to determine who had the right of way. “We have some witnesses that we talked to,” Fournel said. “We are trying to see who was at fault.” Approximately 15 to 16 high school-aged teenagers on the bus at the time, but Fournel says neither they nor the driver were not physically hurt. Monna Leigh Mcelveny, a cyclist with the Kanata-Nepean Bicycle Club, says the incident underlines the need for greater safety education. “Any fatality is a tragedy to the biking community, which only reinforces the need for increased community education,” Mcelveny said. Police say Route 105 was closed for approximately five hours for the investigation. With files from CTV’s Natalie van Rooy
