Several injured after boats collide in Kelowna, B.C.

Mounties say weather and impairment have been ruled out as factors after two boats collided in Kelowna, B.C., sending multiple people to hospital Wednesday night.

Police responded to the crash scene on Okanagan Lake, approximately 500 metres south of the William R. Bennett Bridge, at 8:41 p.m., according to a statement from the West Kelowna RCMP.

“Several passengers on one of the vessels sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated by B.C. Emergency Health Services,” police said.

The paramedic agency says seven people were assessed and treated for injuries, with three of them transported to hospital in stable condition.

“An additional four people accompanied family members to the hospital in an ambulance but did not appear to be injured,” spokesperson Bowen Osoko said Thursday.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue responded to the collision alongside police, paramedics and firefighters.

“It was initially unknown if any subjects were in the water but quick action by the Kelowna RCMP determined everyone was accounted for,” the volunteer search-and-rescue agency said in a social media post.

“At this stage, investigators have confirmed that impairment and weather conditions were not factors in the collision,” the RCMP statement said. “The matter remains under investigation by the West Kelowna RCMP.”

Cpl. Devon Gerrits said the department is “grateful for the co-ordinated response” from the other agencies, which “ensured the safe rescue and care of those involved.”

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has video of the crash to contact the West Kelowna RCMP.
