Pair of overnight shootings south of the Fraser extortion-related, police say

Police in Surrey and Delta are investigating early morning shootings in their respective cites, and both are believed to be extortion-related.

The sound of gunfire jolted people awake in North Delta in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Delta Police call the shooting extortion-related and say it happened shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Brook Road.

A white house in the middle of the block was riddled with bullets.

Some peppered the garage, others struck the front door and some pierced windows on both the lower and upper floors.

Nobody was injured by the gunfire.

It’s unclear who lives in the home, but a small bike on the balcony suggests a child could have been inside.

Hours earlier, at 1:30 a.m. a house in Newton was also targeted by gunfire in what Surrey police are also calling extortion-related violence.

The home on 77A Avenue in Newton had several bullet holes in the front windows.

Police say it’s fortunate nobody was hurt in that shooting either.

“It’s obvious that the people perpetrating this place no value on human life if they are willing to indiscriminately fire bullets at a house,” Surrey Police Service spokesperson Sgt. Tige Pollock told CTV News. “It’s dangerous.”

Back in Delta, police had Brook Road cordoned off for hours as investigators gathered evidence and canvassed for witnesses.

A spokesperson for Delta Police said the agency is currently working on 12 extortion-related cases.

Those do not include investigations led by the multi-jurisdictional Extortion Task Force.

A BC RCMP spokesperson told CTV News the task force does not handle all extortion-related files, instead focusing on those that have been determined to have links to other investigations or established suspect groups.

In each of the two most recent shootings, the investigations are being led by local police in the respective jurisdictions.
