‘Concerning’ courier cash scam on the rise in Richmond, RCMP warn

Mounties in Richmond are warning the public about a growing scam in the city, in which fraudsters pose as officials and arrange for a courier to collect cash from victims’ homes.

In a news release, Richmond RCMP said a senior nearly fell victim to what is being called the courier cash scam.

“A quick-thinking Richmond senior narrowly avoided losing thousands of dollars after a scammer posing as a courthouse official tried to send a courier to their home to collect cash,” Mounties said in the release, adding that this is becoming a “growing and concerning trend.”

In the most recent case, the senior reportedly received a phone call from a man who claimed to be a courthouse official.

Police said the caller told the senior that a friend had been involved in an accident and needed money. The man then claimed a courier could come to their home to collect several thousand dollars in cash.

After going to the bank, the senior then contacted the friend directly and learned it was a scam.

RCMP said no money was handed over and officers later visited the senior’s home to make sure they were safe and provide support.

“These scams rely on surprise, pressure, and fear,” Sgt. Dave Au said in the release. “If someone calls asking for money because a loved one is in trouble, stop and verify the story. No police service or court will ever send a courier to your home to collect cash. Taking a moment to check with someone you trust can prevent you from becoming a victim.”

Mounties are urging residents to take the proper precautions, including contacting the person supposedly in trouble directly, refusing to hand over any money to unexpected visitors, and never sharing banking details with unsolicited callers.

Police added that any suspected fraud should be reported to them immediately.

“Richmond RCMP is reminding the public to treat any unexpected request for money, valuables, or credit cards as suspicious,” Mounties said. “Scammers may use many variations of this scheme, including attempts to collect cash, gold bars, or credit cards. A simple rule can help keep you safe: If you didn’t initiate it, don’t facilitate it.”
