Can Flex Seal really float your leaky boat?

Flex Seal spray promises to seal holes and dry to a watertight, flexible rubberized coating, but can the liquid rubber really stop leaks?

Flex Seal, which retails for $19.95, is advertised as a handyman in a can, able to fix everything from roof repairs to basement leaks.

Steele on Your Side put the spray to the test in its latest “As Seen on TV” product testing segment.

Lynda Steele first tested a gutter with a couple of cracks in it. She sprayed the Flex Seal on and let it dry for more than 24 hours. She then poured water inside the eavestrough to see if it stopped the leaks.

"It's not exactly a tight seal or anything. There are quite a few drops of water coming out the end, so that one wasn't a complete success," said Steele.

Next up was a flower pot with a crack in it. Again, Steele gave the broken pot several coats of Flex Seal. She let it dry for more than 24 hours and poured water inside to see if it leaked.

"I've got a bunch of water in there right above the crack that we sealed and it’s totally dry. It seems to work pretty good with the flower pot," said Steele

Finally, it was time to test a homemade boat with a mesh bottom. Steele gave the little boat several sprays with Flex Seal and let it dry for several days. The boat was then put in a container full of water to see if it would actually float.

“It's actually pretty dry in here, I'm sort of impressed," said Steele.

The makers of Flex Seal claim the seal will last a lifetime, a pretty big promise for a little can full of liquid rubber.
